Yashasvi Jaiswal, the dynamic Indian opener, stands on the cusp of achieving a remarkable feat. He is just 97 runs shy of becoming the quickest Indian batsman to reach 2,000 Test runs. As India prepares to face England in the second Test at Edgbaston, beginning on July 2nd, Jaiswal has the opportunity to eclipse a 49-year-old record held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.

Jaiswal's consistent performance has been a silver lining for India amidst a challenging period of transition in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley demonstrated his exceptional talent, although it wasn't enough to prevent India from suffering a five-wicket defeat. Despite setting a formidable target of 371 runs, India was outplayed by England's confident run chase, spearheaded by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, giving England a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.
However, Jaiswal's individual brilliance provides a beacon of hope for India as they seek to level the series at Edgbaston. In his nascent Test career of just 20 matches, he has already amassed 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
Currently, the record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by Sunil Gavaskar, who reached the milestone in his 23rd Test in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first-ever cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Following him on the list are Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who both reached the 2,000-run mark in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal now has a golden opportunity to join and even surpass these legends, providing India with a crucial boost in a must-win Test match.
