The Seattle Orcas have announced a significant overhaul to their leadership structure midway through the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. The team, currently languishing at the bottom of the table without a single win in five matches, has parted ways with head coach Matthew Mott.
According to an official statement released by MLC, the decision to remove Mott stemmed from "differences in coaching and management strategies." The Orcas are hoping that a change in leadership will spark a turnaround in their fortunes.
Adding to the shake-up, captain Heinrich Klaasen has also stepped down from his role to concentrate more intensely on his batting performance.
Sikandar Raza, the experienced Zimbabwean all-rounder, will assume the captaincy. The team hopes Raza's leadership will provide a fresh impetus.
Hemant Dua, CEO of the Seattle Orcas, addressed the changes in a statement: "This is a moment of reflection and renewal for the Seattle Orcas. This has been a tough run for the team, and with it, some difficult decisions had to be made. We are grateful to Matthew for his commitment and professionalism during his time with us, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors."
Dua also commented on Klaasen's decision and the appointment of Raza: "We respect Heinrich's decision to step down voluntarily as captain to focus on his batting. This reflects his character and team-first mindset. Sikandar was our unanimous choice once we heard from Klassen about his decision. We believe these changes set the stage for a strong second half of the season."
The Orcas are aiming to replicate their success from the 2023 season, where they topped the table and reached the final. However, they finished at the bottom in 2024. Despite their current struggles, the team has enough matches remaining to salvage the season and climb up the standings.
