Former England captain Nasser Hussain has shared his thoughts on Jofra Archer's inclusion in England’s Test squad, labeling it a "gamble worth taking," while also advising caution about immediately placing him in the starting XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Jofra Archer's return to the Test squad is viewed as a strategic gamble by former captain Nasser Hussain.
Archer, whose last Test appearance was in February 2021, has been named in the squad for the second Test commencing on July 2. The 30-year-old has been contending with persistent elbow and back injuries, recently marking his return to red-ball cricket for Sussex, where he bowled 18 overs against Durham, securing figures of 1/32.
Hussain, in his analysis on Sky Sports, acknowledged the emotional and physical challenges of Archer’s recovery: "Firstly, it's great news for both Archer and England. Jofra has undoubtedly endured a great deal with his elbow and back injuries – the rehab, the pain, and the mental anguish of repeated injuries and comebacks. It’s fantastic to see him back in the squad… especially considering he hasn't played a Test match in four years."
However, the former captain urged against rushing Archer into the XI for the Edgbaston Test. "I believe it carries too much risk this week. Of course, things might have progressed exceptionally well – I'm not intimately familiar with Jofra Archer's physical condition. If that's the case, they might be tempted to play him this week. But then the question becomes: who do you leave out?"
Despite this reservation, Hussain expressed optimism regarding the long-term benefits of Archer’s return. "I maintain that it's a gamble worth considering, though I’m unsure if this week is the right time. I would lean towards bringing him in a week later at Lord's."
England currently holds a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, having secured a five-wicket victory at Leeds. The remainder of the squad remains unchanged for Edgbaston.
