The Indian cricket team commenced their training in Birmingham on Friday, engaging in an intensive three-hour session amidst favorable weather conditions. The squad, led by Shubman Gill, arrived at the venue around 9:15 am local time, with all players present for their first experience of Birmingham's environment.
Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna were notably absent from the net area, despite traveling with the team. Although they returned with the squad on the team bus, they did not participate in the batting and bowling drills alongside their teammates. Both players remained within the stadium premises.
Mohammed Siraj focused exclusively on his batting skills, dedicating significant time to drills under the guidance of batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. He practiced leaving, ducking, and playing deliveries for nearly 30 minutes before rejoining his fellow seamers.
The absence of Bumrah and Krishna from bowling activities could be attributed to workload management during the extended tour, particularly after their participation in the Headingley Test. The uncertainty surrounding Bumrah's participation in the second Test has become a focal point within the Indian camp.
The decision regarding Bumrah's involvement will be made in consultation with the medical team, potentially opening opportunities for players waiting for their chance. Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh underwent extensive spells with both bat and ball, closely monitored by the support staff and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Arshdeep has been collaborating extensively with bowling coach Morne Morkel, refining his run-up, back-foot landing, and overall alignment. Their continuous exchange of notes and constant communication have been a consistent feature from Leeds to Birmingham. Arshdeep also actively engages in competitive practice sessions with his Punjab teammate Gill.
Gill frequently seeks Arshdeep's assistance when focusing on specific aspects of his game, with Arshdeep delivering high-intensity bowling in the nets. This intensity is mirrored by fellow seamer Akash Deep. Should Bumrah be unavailable, either Arshdeep or Akash could be selected for the Playing XI, as India requires a new-ball bowler with the necessary skills to control and utilize the red cherry effectively.
While it is still early in the lead-up to the Test on July 2, both seamers are demonstrating promising form during training, potentially presenting a challenging decision for the Indian team management. The ultimate selection may hinge on Bumrah's availability.
Akash's full-fledged performance has the potential to trouble even the most accomplished batsmen, while Arshdeep could emerge as India's surprise weapon.
