Google has unveiled a series of measures designed to support the democratic process and protect its platforms from manipulation during the upcoming Indian General Election. Acknowledging its role in connecting users with reliable information, the tech giant aims to combat misinformation, including content generated by artificial intelligence, as millions of eligible voters prepare to cast their ballots.
A key focus for Google is to provide straightforward access to authoritative information sourced from trusted entities.
The company is collaborating with the Election Commission of India to prominently display essential details on Google Search and YouTube. This includes information on voter registration and voting procedures, available in both English and Hindi.
YouTube's recommendation algorithms will prioritize credible content throughout the election period. The platform's homepage will feature trusted sources, accompanied by an "Up Next" panel, ensuring that election-related information is readily accessible to users.
YouTube will also showcase content from verified sources during significant moments via its Top News and Breaking News sections, along with a dedicated news watch page.
Furthermore, Google has introduced information panels to identify funding sources for publishers receiving public or government funds, and to provide context for topics susceptible to misinformation.
To uphold the integrity of the electoral process and safeguard its platforms, Google has reinforced its existing policies to maintain safety and curb the spread of misinformation. These policies are applicable to all users, irrespective of the content type.
Google employs a combination of human reviewers and AI models to detect and remove content that violates these guidelines. Google's AI capabilities are enhancing its efforts to combat abuse, enabling quicker responses to emerging threats.
Google mandates that advertisers undergo identity verification and secure necessary certifications from the Election Commission to ensure transparency in election-related advertising. Election ads must also include disclosures that specify the advertiser's identity and location. Google operates a searchable hub containing all election ads, providing insights into advertisers and their spending.
Google is taking proactive steps to identify AI-generated content through new tools and policies. The company has implemented disclosure requirements for election ads that contain synthetic content and will soon require YouTube creators to label realistic altered or synthetic content. The updated ad policies prohibit the use of manipulated media, such as deepfakes or doctored content, to mislead the public.
Google has also implemented restrictions on Gemini regarding election-related queries and prioritized the provision of high-quality information. Features like the "About this Image" tool in Search and digital watermarking for AI-generated images will provide users with context and aid in assessing credibility.
Moreover, Google has joined the C2PA coalition, a cross-industry initiative to promote transparency and context for AI-generated content. The company has confirmed the deployment of technology to counter harmful AI-generated content intended to deceive voters during the 2024 elections.
