England's Audacious Claim: 'We Could Have Chased 450' in Thrilling Test Victory
Following England's remarkable victory over India in the first Test at Headingley, Jos Buttler and Stuart Broad dissected the chase, suggesting England was capable of exceeding the already challenging target of 371.

In their podcast, 'For The Love of Cricket,' the pair lauded England's aggressive approach and pinpointed critical moments that shifted the game's momentum. India initially set a formidable 471, fueled by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. However, England responded fiercely, narrowing the lead to a mere six runs. India then added 364 runs in their third innings. In response, Ben Duckett's explosive 149 and a steady performance from Jamie Smith propelled England to a stylish victory.
Buttler confidently stated, "I think it would've come down to time, but even if they were chasing 450, they'd have given it a go. They cruised that 370." This highlights the control and ease England displayed during their final innings.
He further elaborated that while a higher target would inherently involve greater risks, England’s batting lineup, particularly the top order, possessed the necessary firepower and self-belief to take on the challenge. “They’d have had to take more risks, but they’d definitely have had a go at it,” Buttler emphasized.
This aggressive mindset aligns perfectly with captain Ben Stokes' well-known aversion to draws, a defining characteristic of England’s "Bazball" philosophy. Under the guidance of coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes' leadership, England has consistently pursued ambitious fourth-innings targets with unwavering determination.
With a 1-0 lead and considerable momentum, England's statement win serves as a clear indication of their intention to continue pushing boundaries as they head to Edgbaston.
