Just days after facing harsh criticism from Australian cricketing legend Ian Healy, West Indies seamer Shamar Joseph responded emphatically, claiming 4 wickets for 46 runs in the first innings of the first Test against Australia. His performance included a particularly impressive dismissal that has captivated fans.
The backdrop to this performance was Healy's stinging remarks made on SEN radio prior to the Test. Healy referenced an incident where Joseph reportedly warned Sam Konstas to "look out," and dismissed Joseph's abilities, stating, "OK Shamar, well you've delivered crap all year... You're not Curtly Ambrose, champ."
However, on the opening day in Bridgetown, Joseph let his bowling do the talking. He removed Konstas, adding insult to injury.
The dismissal of Konstas occurred in the fourth over. The ball struck the Aussie opener on the back leg, leading to a West Indies appeal for leg before wicket (LBW). The on-field umpire turned down the appeal, prompting the Windies to review the decision.
The video replay clearly showed that the ball would have hit the leg stump, overturning the original decision. This breakthrough gave Joseph and the West Indies an early advantage, as they bowled Australia out for a modest 180 runs. Jayden Seales also contributed with a strong bowling performance.
Despite Joseph's efforts, the West Indies struggled in their first innings, finishing the day at 57/4. This Test series marks Australia's first visit to the West Indies since 2015.
This is not the first time Joseph has troubled the Australian batsmen. During his second Test in January 2024, he delivered a stunning 10-over spell, claiming six wickets and contributing significantly to the West Indies' victory by 8 runs at the Gabba. That win marked their first Test victory on Australian soil in 27 years. Shamar Joseph's outstanding figures of 7/68 in that match solidified his potential as a formidable bowler.
