The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Gupta is set to assume his responsibilities on July 7, 2025, becoming the seventh CEO in the organization's history.
Gupta brings a wealth of experience to the role, currently serving as CEO, Sports & Live Experiences, at JioStar. He has over 20 years of experience in media, entertainment, and sports. His career began in journalism, and he later joined Star India in 2010, where he held several leadership positions in content and strategy. In 2020, he became Head of Sports at Disney & Star India. Following the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star, Gupta was appointed CEO of JioStar Sports in 2024.
"I am pleased to announce that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as the CEO of the ICC," stated ICC Chairman Jay Shah. "Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization, which will be invaluable for the ICC."
Shah further emphasized Gupta's understanding of the global sports and media landscape, coupled with his focus on the cricket fan and passion for technology, as key factors in achieving the ICC's goals. These goals include expanding the game's reach, potentially including cricket in the Olympics, and strengthening its presence in core markets.
"We considered several exceptional candidates for this position, but the Nominations Committee unanimously recommended Sanjog. The ICC Board Directors look forward to working closely with him, and I would like to welcome him on behalf of everyone at the ICC," Shah added.
The ICC stated that the appointment followed a global recruitment process that began in March 2025. Over 2,500 applications were received from candidates across 25 countries. The ICC's HR & Remuneration Committee shortlisted 12 candidates, who were then evaluated by a Nominations Committee composed of ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, ECB Chair Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva, and BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia. The ICC Board unanimously approved Gupta's nomination after the final assessment.
Sanjog Gupta, the incoming ICC CEO, expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, "It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is poised for unprecedented growth and enjoys the passionate support of almost 2 billion fans worldwide." He highlighted the exciting times ahead for the sport, with marquee events gaining prominence, commercial opportunities expanding, and the women's game increasing in popularity. He also mentioned the potential impact of cricket's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid adoption of technology.
Gupta concluded, "I look forward to contributing to the next phase of cricket's evolution, expanding its global footprint, enhancing the fan experience, and working closely with ICC Member Boards to build on our strong foundations."
